The “Festes de Sant Joan” in Ciutadella mark the beginning of summer in Menorca. Dating back to the 14th century, they remain faithful to tradition with three key ingredients that make them unique: the Menorcan purebred horse, “caixers” and “cavallers” (riders). Three protagonists that dance to the sound of the typical music of Menorca’s fiestas, with the “jaleo” as its greatest expression. Besides marking the beginning of summer, Sant Joan is the first of Menorca’s patron saint festivals. Until mid-September, in every town on the Island and in some villages and residential areas, people experience the ritual of the horse, the music, the Pomada and the joy.
